HISTORY OF SJCC NINE-HOLE WOMEN’S GOLF
San Jose Country Club organized the first 9-hole women’s golf group in California in 1947. Pro Eddie Duino and Mrs. Clifford Bronson felt the need for such a group for women who wanted to play only nine holes and Eddie Duino thought it would attract more women members to start playing golf. Under his supervision, Mrs. Bronson, Mrs. Peter Maurer, and Mrs. Walter Fessenden wrote the by-laws and procedures of play. Mrs. Bronson was captain; Mrs. Maurer treasurer and Mrs. Fessenden was secretary of the charter group which consisted of some eighteen women. Within a year the group had grown to around fifty dues-paying members. Mrs. Bronson, Mrs. Maurer, and Mrs. Fessenden were reelected to the same offices in 1948.
The first few years the group played the first through the ninth holes. Walking from the ninth green back to the clubhouse with a caddie or pulling a cart was quite an uphill climb so in the late 1950’s Eddie Duino worked out two separate official nine holes. The front nine was hole 1 through 7, plus 17 & 18. The back was 8 through 16. The arrangement has worked out very satisfactorily.
In 1974, Pro Gary Plato and Al Braga of the Villages approached the two 9-hole captains, Mrs. Fred Pfeiffer of San Jose, and Rita Baumgarten of the Villages, about the possibility of clubs organizing a 9-hole Northern California Golf Association. Nine clubs from around the Bay were the charter clubs for this association; today it has grown to include some forty clubs in Northern California with three thousand individual members. We had the honor of one of our members, Mrs. James Dale, being the President of the Association in 1982. The Association is known as W.N.H.G.A. and as of 1987, it is a member of the Northern California Council of Golf.
